The Mindfulness Association is offering this course for MBLC teachers for the first time in 2019.
It is an opportunity for those MBLC teachers who fulfil the requirements to join the UK Listing of Mindfulness Teachers to develop their Mindfulness teaching skills across all six domains of the MBI-TAC and receive a full competency assessment. The aim of the course is to promote a reflective Mindfulness teaching practice, in which we are able to reflect on our teaching practice and recognise our strengths and weaknesses, celebrate our strengths and aspire to work the edge and develop any areas of weakness. This course will also be useful for Mindfulness supervisors who observe and assess the teaching of their supervisees using the MBI-TAC.
It is expected that at some point in the future the UK Listing will include a designation of those who have undergone a full MBI-TAC competency assessment.
Entry requirements are as follows:
- Participant has been assessed as ready to teach the MBLC on the MBLC teaching skills retreat or is on the MA panel of tutors
- Participant has taught at least two MBLC courses under supervision and is in regular supervision with a recognised supervisor
- Participant attends an annual retreat and meets the other ongoing good practice requirements of the Good Practice Guidelines for Mindfulness teachers
The entry requirements can be evidenced by registration on the UK Listing or by a reference from the participant’s supervisor.
The first weekend of the course will include training on all domains, with a particular focus on conveying course themes through interactive teaching and enquiry; relational skills; and holding the group learning environment. Because these are the ones that people struggle with or that are not so fully explored in the teacher training so far. There will also be training on providing focussed feedback by developing the ability to spot and offer supportive feedback in relation to all domains. This will include work in tutorial groups and small groups, with feedback from self, peers and tutors. After the weekend each participant will receive a provisional competency assessment from the tutors and have a phone call to discuss this with one of the tutors.
Between the two weekends, participants will deliver an 8 week MBLC course, while videoing themselves. Participants will then do an MBI-TAC self-assessment of two of the MBLC videoed sessions designated by the tutor team. Participants will be placed in groups to peer assess each other’s videoed sessions and discuss the outcomes, then each participant will send their videos, the self and peer assessments, an assessment summary and their reflections on what they have learned from this process to the tutors for their assessment. There will then be a second provisional competency assessment from the tutors and a phone call to discuss this with one of the tutors before the second weekend of the course.
Participants must have a video course ready to run between April and June 2019 so as to be ready to hand in their assessments by the end of September 2019 (or their participation would be affected).
At the second weekend participants will have an opportunity to deliver an MBLC session extract in their tutorial group, agreed with their tutor to enable them to work their edge. After the second weekend the tutors will provide a full competency assessment covering all 6 domains, endorsed by the Mindfulness Association and including the level the participant was perceived to attain in each MBI-TAC domain.
