Announcement about Long Chod Practice

30 Apr 2016

When Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche was alive, as a birthday offering to him, people who had taken part in a long term retreat would gather in Samye Ling to practice the long Chod together.  This was always a joyous and inspiring time when Rinpoche’s students and friends could come and either participate in the Chod or meditate in the temple alongside the practitioners.

Now that Rinpoche is no longer with us, we continue the tradition and dedicate our practice both to Akong Rinpoche’s swift return and to the long life of Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche who has taken on the burden of maintaining his brother’s activities in his absence.

In 2017, the date of the birthday celebration will be 10th May, the 15th day of the third month in the Tibetan calendar and the day on which the 2nd Akong Tulku was born in 1940.  Therefore we will do the long Chod on 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th May, finishing at lunchtime on the 10th. There will also be a day of preparation on Saturday 6th May - click here to see details.

For two years following Akong Rinpoche's passing we did the long Chod practice on the anniversary of his death. However Drupon Rinpoche's Meditation Retreat begins each year on 8th October, the day on which Rinpoche passed away, to give everyone the opportunity to practice meditation and Guru Yoga as an offering to him.

Many people found it difficult to come to both the Chod and the retreat and we hope that having the Chod at the time of Rinpoche's birth will allow more people to participate in both occasions.

The Buddhist principle is to be everybody's friend, not to have any enemy.
