Offering unique access to the birthplaces of the Karmapas in Eastern Tibetan Areas of China
With Catherine Brown
In
July 2011, Catherine plans to take a group to the eastern Tibetan areas (of China)
to visit many of the spiritually significant sites connected with the Karmapas
and raise funds for their preservation.
The trip will include visits to the birthplaces of the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 14th,16th and 17th Karmapas, as well as monasteries established by the 1st Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, and the 2nd Karmapa, and other monasteries and sites of spiritual significance.
This
trip will be unique in its access to sites sacred to the Kagyu school, which we
are able to visit because of Rokpa's work in these areas - many sites are not
accessible or open to regular tourists. Preserving these sites and ensuring their heritage is available to
generations to come is an important part of Rokpa's commitment to maintaining
the Tibetan culture.
To participate, each participant is asked to raise £2,000 in donations for Rokpa's cultural projects in the Tibetan areas, which provide skills training and work for crafts people and encourage tourism into poor and nomadic communities. In addition, the cost of the trip, including an economy class flight from Amsterdam to Chengdu, is likely to be around £3,000-£3,500.
