Dumfries and Galloway Doors Open Days

Last weekend Samye Ling participated in the 21st Dumfries and Galloway Doors Open Days, where 34 sites across the county opened their doors to the public. This years theme for the weekend was 'Through the Keyhole' and our magnificent Guru Rinpoche statue took pride of place on the front page of the brochure.
Although we are already open every day we were delighted to offer events to the public. Tours were offered each day at 11am and 3pm with a total of almost 130 people taking the opportunity to be shown round. Of the people who took a tour only three had visited Samye Ling before and so the weekend proved to be a fantastic way to draw in new people.
On both afternoons, Marianne Dreyfuss very kindly donated her time to open our Victory Stupa to the public and was also available to answer questions. This gave visitors the opportunity to see our wonderful Amitabha shrine, which is normally closed to the public.
Our daily Mahakala prayers were also very well attended with lots of visitors making the most of the chance to experience a traditional Buddhist prayer session.
Altogether the weekend attracted around 200 visitors to Samye Ling with many people enjoying the chance to explore on their own and spend time in the shop and tea rooms. Many of the visitors were intrigued by what they had discovered right on their doorstep and several expressed an interest in coming back for another visit or to participate in a course so hopefully we will see some of these new faces again.
