Old Greenhouse Reconstruction Appeal

The old Greenhouse (16 x 8 yards) is the nursery at the heart of the Garden Project. It provides space and protection for the cultivation of plants throughout the year. Purchased second-hand 40 years ago, it houses a wide selection of cuttings, seedlings and potted plants. It is home to one of the finest vines in Southern Scotland that trails over the arches and produces some 500 bunches of black dessert grapes each year. There are also a fig tree, nectarine and our apricot. Underneath are beds of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, basil and parsley.
This old building has required constant maintenance for many years, but has particularly suffered during the

past two severe winters. It is now in such poor condition with sagging timbers that roof repairs have become precarious.
The plan is to build a new Greenhouse designed to accommodate the difficult local conditions. It will be constructed of rendered blocks with timber clad columns, timber roof trusses and high quality clear roofing sheets. The window frames will be western red cedar and the old roof glass will be recycled as side panels.
The new Greenhouse will allow the cultivation of a broader range of crops and will provide greater heat retention. Its extra staging area will provide invaluable workspace as a specialised training area. The existing trees will be protected during the construction.
Estimated Cost: £9,250
