These consist of 25 sessions, which can be completed one day a week
or by arrangement. Each unit involves a variety of seasonal tasks and
tutorials. You can choose to either do only the units which most
interest you, or complete all the units for the award of SVQ Production
Horticulture Level 2, no previous experience required. Course fees are
£9.70 a day and students may apply for full ILA sponsorship of up to £200
to cover the cost of one unit.
Cutting
back and clearing ground to prepare deep beds and incorporate organic
matter. Understanding the requirements of the soil, pH testing and
crop rotation. Path building and maintenance.
Creating
an efficient compost heap using kitchen and garden waste, farmyard
manure and activator. Emptying previous heaped bins. Mixing home made
general purpose compost in preparation for seeds and seedlings.
Using
the bio-dynamic calendar. Preparation and sowing into beds, trays, pots
and modules. Aftercare of seedlings and pricking out. Using the
propagators and cold frames, and how to protect crops from
environmental conditions and pests.
How
to select suitable plants and identify disorders. Assembling plant
support, providing suitable humidity and ventilation, cloches and pest
protection.
How
to maintain plants through pruning, provision of appropriate support,
weeding, irrigation, and fertilizer. Preparation of organic feeds such
as liquid manure and comfrey water and identification of plant damage
and problems.
How
to create protection from pests. Management of ventilation, watering
and humidity in the greenhouse. Identification and control of pests and
disorders. Organic methods such as companion planting.
Harvesting the crops such as potatoes, leaf vegetables, roots, legumes and fruiting vegetables. Preparation and quality control for the kitchen. Drying and processing the herbs
