Weekend Workshops

Our weekend workshops are ideal if you want to know a little bit more to help you with your own garden or if you'd like a taster before signing up to one of our longer courses. You will gain experience of a variety of seasonal tasks and get handouts to take home. Through these weekends, skills can be accrued for SVQ units and no previous experience is required. Workshops are limited to 3 participants so please book ahead. Course fees are £65 a weekend, and you may be eligible for ILA sponsorship to cover this through Learn Direct Scotland.

Preparation and Early Sowing

March
Cutting back and clearing ground to prepare deep beds and incorporating organic matter. Understanding the requirements of the soil, for example, pH testing and crop rotation. How to use the bio-dynamic calendar to sow into drills, trays, pots and modules and learning the needs of each crop.

Main crop Sowing and Planting Out

May
Preparation to sow seeds and potatoes, planting out leaf crops, salads, greenhouse tomatoes and peppers. Making potting compost and pricking out. dividing herbaceous perennials, e.g. chives, vervain and skullcap, monitoring environmental conditions and pest control.

Tending and Harvesting Crops

August
September

Successional sowings and planting out, mixing compost, weeding and watering, assembling support for crops. Picking salads and leaf crops, picking and drying herbs. Making liquid manure and comfrey water. Harvesting the fruit and veg.
